RURAL WOMEN FARMERS ADOPT AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION THROUGH LIVELIHOOD SKILLS TRAINING

To foster innovation in the agricultural industry, a total of 100 rural women farmers from 10 different associations and cooperatives in the city accomplished the Training and Provision of Livelihood Start-up Kit conducted by the Office of the City Agriculturist of the City Government of San Fernando, La Union held at the Food Terminal, Barangay Tanqui on November 22, 2024.

Dr. Cristopher M. Apilado, City Veterinarian II, Ms. Josefina N. Sacnit, GAD-TWG member and Ms. Mayeth G. Navasca, Assistant Prof. IV at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – North La Union Campus, discussed the basic guide for the health and care management of poultry production, care and maintenance of mushroom production and food safety, labelling and packaging for vegetables   including hands-on demonstration for the assorted dried vegetables and fruits.

Among the attendees were City Mayor Hermenegildo A. Gualberto, City Vice Mayor Hon. Alfredo Pablo R. Ortega, City Councilors Hon. Edwin H. Yumol, Hon. Aldrine R. Jucar, Hon. Kyle Marie Eufrosito Y. Nisce, Hon. John H. Orros and Ms. Valerie Ann S. Valdez, Executive Assistant IV and Ma. Theresa Navarro, GAD-TWG Chairperson to grace the event with their presence.

This training follows a holistic approach to empower rural women that are members of agri-fishery associations and cooperatives and provide new opportunities for livelihood growth. This further aims to develop their entrepreneurial skills to manage their income generating  project and foster agricultural engagement to become more efficient agri-entrepreneur in their rural communities.

Furthermore, this program intends to help farmers and fisherfolk and effectively improve the food distribution system by capacitating them to become reliable and efficient food commodity suppliers, increasing their engagement and participation in city agri-fisheries activities to ensure sustainability of this project.
